After a lovely visit with our friends Manuel and Alejandra in Toluca, the four of us set out early on Sunday morning with very clear skies, so we had a good view of Nevado de Toluca (15,354ft, 4th highest peak in Mexico). Arriving in Tenancingo, one of the Pueblos Magicos of Edo. De Mexico, we first drove up the hill to La Compuerta, where an impressive statue of Christ the King is located on the very top. It is 21 meters tall, atop a 9 meter base. Great views of the valley and the many greenhouses where flowers are grown. Then we drove into downtown Tenancingo, jammed with people for the Sunday market. Lois had been reading about the famous rebozos (shawls) made in Tenancingo, and hoped to buy one. She succeeded in the intense scene on the street devoted to rebozo vendors and shoppers. The woman who made her rebozo and sold it to her is named Serafina. Next we found a comfortable and authentic comedor in the market, and had a feast of gordas, quesadillas, and sopes. A friendly woman in the comedor told us that the flower market is worth a visit, so we went looking and found it a few blocks away – colorful indeed!
