On the weekend before Ash Wednesday – Carnaval weekend in many places – we have enjoyed a festival unique to Querétaro both this year and last year. There are no announcements that this is happening. You have to stumble upon it (as we did last year) or just know it is happening. There are two (unrelated?) components: the indigenous Conchero dancers put on a major happening in the plaza in front of the Templo de la Cruz. Hundreds of them show up with elaborate dress and decorations, set up “ofrenda” displays, with incense, drumming, and dancing. The second component is a fireworks display, featuring a tower called “The Castle” (Castillo). We enjoyed this in 2011 during a visit by our friends Kay, Mike, and Barbara – photos are included in last year’s page on their visit.
