We were up early to leave Ancud by 7:30, so we arrived at the Penguin refuge at Punihuil at 9:45am (long dirt road). We were guided by a knowledgeable young German woman, volunteering at the Ottway Foundation station where the staff and volunteers protect the penguins resident in the summer on the three small islets in the cove. The tour required us to put on waders for our 45 minutes in a small zodiac boat, expertly piloted by an Ottway staff member. We saw Magellanic penguins and Humboldt penguins (rare and endangered): this is the only overlap point of their breeding zones -- the Magellanic breed from Tierra del Fuego up to Punihuil, and the Humboldt from Punihuil north to Peru.
