By chance, Gareth (who went to the Pujllay ceremony at Jumbate with us) was also in Potosi, staying in the same Hostal Compañia de Jesus so we toured the city together on Saturday morning. We were guided by Thelma in the first tour of the day at the San Francisco church and convent, enjoying the views from the roof and bell tower before the rains began. Even in the rain, it was good to wander about seeing some of the other colonial churches. We also visited the San Marcos Ingenio (smelter) – one of the many waterwheel-powered plants that refined ore brought down from Cerro Rico. This one has been remodeled to a fancy-looking restaurant. Sadly, they didn’t seem to want to open for business so we abandoned ship after a 30 minute wait.
