On Sunday, March 4, 2007 we set out at 8am for the mountains to the west that divide Chuquisaca (the Departamento that includes Sucre) from Potosi. The range, which is sometimes called “Cordillera de los Frailes” (incorrectly, according to Juan Carlos, one of our guides), is some 40 km from Sucre. We had some light rain as we drove west in a little minivan with Juan Carlos, Laurencia (our other guide), and the driver. The dirt roads got narrower, muddier, and scarier as we climbed into the mountains. We got stuck a couple of times, but arrived at the trail OK and set out at 10am. Almost immediately as we walked the trail, Laurencia spotted a viscacha in a beautiful setting (we had seen one of these chinchilla-rabbit rodents in Macchu Pichu last year). A two-hour hike took us to the National Monument Incamachay, where we had to climb through a rock fence to get in because the gate was locked. We enjoyed the 2500-year-old rock paintings and had our lunch. The weather improved as we hiked. The return hike involved lots of climbing (at some 12,000 ft altitude) but still we got back in 2 hours time. On the way back to Sucre we stopped for a dramatic view of the city from the last mountain pass.
